TAYUG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL![]() In 1945, Tayug had become the seat of the Provincial Government which was evacuated from the provincial capitol. The rubles and smoke of World War II was still around. Occasionally, an enemy plane would sweep over the few buildings that housed the headquarters of the liberation forces. But life was coming back to normal- thanks to the 32nd Red Arrow Division and the arrival of the Philippine Civilian Aid Unit (PCAU) which took over the task of rehabilitating the socio-economic life of the townspeople.
Hand in hand with the rehabilitation movement and the temporary transfer of the Provincial Government to Tayug came the opening of a public high school in the community . On March 12, 1945 the public high school opened its doors to the young boys and girls whose secondary schooling was delayed for three years . Thus, under the leadership of its first principal, Mrs. Brigida C. Millan, and the pioneer teachers, namely Mr. And Mrs. Bienvenido Manuel, Mrs. Luisa R. Dotimas, and the late Mr. Bernardo Serquina, the late Mr. Cipriano Carvajal, Mr. Alfonso Ponce, Mr. Gregorio Mauricio, Mrs. Bituin F. Pablo and Mr. Maximo Portiz, the Provincial Junior High School in Tayug was born. First year and second year classes were conducted in the house of the late Don Pedro Ferrer. After a three month completion course for he first and second year students, third year classes were organized. The additional classes were conducted in the house of the late Don Felix Paroni on Burgos Street. Some enthusiastic parents and civic-minded citizens later formed the nucleus of the first Tayug National High School PTA and gave their time and effort to find ways and means to keep the school functioning. Together with the pioneer teachers and some former barrio lieutenants, they went from one barrio to barrio not only in Tayug but also in San Nicolas and nearby towns. As things returned to normal, the Provincial Government moved back to Lingayen. Sometime in 1945, the 32nd Red Arrow Division and the PCAU left for a new destination, Don Pedro V. Menor then a municipal councilor, sponsored a resolution which was subsequently approved for the retention and maintenance of the public high school. In 1946, fourth year classes were organized. Mrs. Brigida C. Millan had left Tayug for a position in the Central Office, so that Mr. Bienvenido Manuel took over the administration of the high school. As the enrolment increased , more effort was exerted for its maintenance. Operettas and dramas were staged in Tayug and as far as Nueva Vizcaya to bolster the funds from the municipal and provincial Board. These funds were used to purchase a lot belonging to the late Pilar Kagaoan. Temporary buildings were constructed on the present site. In April 1947, the Pangasinan Provincial Junior High School, better known as the Tayug Public High School proudly saw its first crop of ninety-four (94) graduates. The history of the Tayug National High School, however is incomplete without mentioning some civic spirited citizens and the entities which have helped the school attain its present status. Among them were the officials of the first TNHS PTA namely: the late Don Sabas Quiban, President, Miss Maria Espique, Secretary, Mrs. Natividad Angara, Treasurer, the late Don Eugenio Fernandez, Auditor, and the Don Pedro Menor Sr., PRO. Yearly, Don Luis Lichauco generously gave substantial amounts to Tayug National High School through TNHS PTA under the leadership of the late Don Sabas A. Quiban. The pioneer teachers, together with Mrs. Brigida C. Millan , the late Mrs. Filipinas A. Ventura, Miss Alejandra N. Naraval, Mr. Numeriano Rodrigo, are worth mentioning. The Municipal Council of Tayug, the Provincial Government of Pangasinan, the National Government, past and present administrations and faculties, and of course the good and generous people of Tayug and the neighboring towns. All of these have made Tayug National High School what it is today. Credit should go to the late Congressman Luciano Millan who authored the bill nationalizing the Tayug National High School and the late Congressman Roberto B. Estrella who worked hard for the release of the funds implementing the full nationalization of the school during the school year 1969-1970. Worth mentioning also are the following former principals in the Tayug National High School, from its full nationalization to the present, to wit; the late Mr. Donato T. Hernandez of Balungao, Pangasinan, Mr. Policarpio P. Bibat of San Nicolas whose tangible accomplishments in the school are the constructions of school buildings and the social hall together with the acquisition of the new school site adjacent to the original site that today the total land area of the school is four hectares more or less. Mr. Crisanto V. Soria who was also responsible for the construction of of the other additional school buildings, extension and construction of the school social hall began working for the issuance of the land title (TCT) for the newly acquired school site. Lately, Mrs. Perlita V. Meniado, also of Balungao, Pangasinan worked for the issuance of the land title, which is now on file at the office of the Cashier, Miss Jovita L. Espero. Mrs. Meniado is also responsible for the construction of the other additional school buildings, further improvement and painting of the fence along the Plaridel Street side of the school lot, concrete fencing of the additional school site on the eastern portion of the school site under the aegis of the TNHS Teachers and Employees Club, the construction of a new three-room school building with two separate comfort rooms on the eastern portion of the school site adjacent to the Science Building. Worth mentioning in the upliftment of the physical facilities of the institution, still during the administration of Mrs. Meniado were the renovations done in the Main Building and the H.E. Building which were badly damaged by the killer quake in July 16, 1990, the completion of the Economic Support Fund Building which is made of three classrooms, the transformation of a two-room building into concrete classrooms from the makeshift building provided for emergency use while the main building was declared unsafe for use, the construction of a storage building behind the newly renovated Lunch Counter, for supplies, school equipment and other school properties. The Lunch Counter is provided with a bathroom and a new wash area, the galvanized iron roof of the CAT-I Office and the extension of the stage in the Social Hall. Dr. Salvacion R Macanas from Villasis, Pangasinan also worked hard for the continuing development and improvement of the institution. It was during her administration that the construction and painting of the main gate of the school was completed which was made possible through the donation given by Hon. Conrado B. Rodrigo, Jr., Municipal Mayor of San Nicolas, Pangasinan, then President of the Parents, Teachers and Community Association. The donation was given during the incumbency of Mrs. Meniado but the construction was only completed during the term of Mrs. Macanas. The construction of the Mathematics Study Shed which was a joint project of the administration and the Mathematics department, the concreting of the other two rooms in the makeshift building and the beautification of the school grounds behind the Administration Building are also accomplishments of the Macanas Administration. Tayug National High School faces the new century with confidence and optimism. The year 1999 was considered a banner year of Dr. Agnes G. Raguinan who took over the realm of the school from the Division Supervisor I, Social Studies, Dr. Neolito M. Dumlao. In her recent assignment as Officer-in-charge of the school, Dr. Agnes G. Raguinan cited noteworthy accomplishments such as the physical improvement of the Administration Building housing the Cashier’s Office, bookkeeper’s office, and the Administrative Officer’s Office and Staff. She also re- organized and actively involved the PTCA officers and members in the construction of functional library for the intellectual advancement of the students. The transformation of the old library into three classrooms labeled as the Social Studies Building was made possible through the fund-raising activity during the United Nations Organization Day Celebration sponsored by the Social Studies Club has mitigated the problem of lack of classrooms. The construction of the Mathematics Conference Room provides a decent conference room and learning center for teachers and students. The most important achievement to reckon with is the holding and hosting of a big event which is the Division Sports Fest at the Tayug National High School Sports Center. Though the challenge carries with it a gargantuan financial burden and heavy task, the strong determination of Dr. Agnes G. Raguinan to keep forging her way ahead until the objective of the Sports Fest is reached, made the Sports Fest a resounding success. The Tayug National High School sincerely acknowledges the unstinted support of Hon. Marius Y. Ladio, Municipal Mayor of Tayug and Hon. Ranjit Ramos Shahani, Representative of the 6th Congressional District of Pangasinan without whom, the construction of the grandstand and the preparation of the oval would not have been made possible. The transformation of the TNHS in terms of physical facilities within the past 56 years is indeed remarkable but if one has to peer beyond the horizons, the TNHS one sees to be taking shape, is exciting, mind-and-spirit stretching and vastly different from what it was yesterday. For if academic excellence is to be juxtaposed with physical development, TNHS tilts the balance towards the former more than the later-an index that TNHS is endowed with a rich reservoir of globally competent mentors. It is not that easy to bring out the best in the students and make them excel in various fields of study despite the atavistic audio-visual and laboratory equipment available. Yet, the TNHS students kept the banner of the TNHS waving high in various competitions in the Division, Regional and National level. Her products include alumni who add to the laurels brought home by the students by continuing to claim a piece of the world at their fingertips. As a monument to the magnanimous effort of all who nurtured its growth, the faithfulness and sacrifices of its pioneers, the generosity and love of the school patrons and benefactors, the loyalty and dedication of the school administration and the teaching force, today, with its school population of 1984 students and One Hundred Twenty One teachers and employees, the Tayug National High School, stately and serene, stands to unselfishly continue its share in the task of nation building. |
